Adam White was a Union soldier whose Medal of Honor recognised the capture of an enemy flag during the closing weeks of the American Civil War. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society records his birth as 21 December 1823 in Switzerland and credits his service to Parkersburg, West Virginia. Details of his childhood, immigration and civilian occupation have not yet been established from reliable records. [1]
White served in Company G, 11th West Virginia Infantry. On 2 April 1865, while a corporal, he captured a flag at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. His official Medal of Honor citation is brief: “Capture of flag.” The award was issued on 13 June 1865. The citation does not identify the captured flag's regiment or give a fuller account of the encounter. [1]
White survived the war. The Medal of Honor Society records his death at Tyner, West Virginia, on 19 May 1895 and his burial in Wadesville Cemetery. Some local and cemetery accounts differ over his life dates and later rank; those details require further archival verification. His documented flag capture remains the basis of the nation's highest military award for his service. [1,2]
