Addison J. Hodges was born on 24 October 1841 at Hillsdale, Michigan. Although a Michigan man, he served in Company B of the 47th Ohio Infantry during the American Civil War. The Michigan Grand Army of the Republic records project explains that his company was raised at Adrian and joined the Ohio regiment as it was being organised. [1,2]
On 3 May 1863, Hodges volunteered for a hazardous supply mission at Vicksburg, Mississippi. His Medal of Honor citation credits him with joining a party that attempted to pass Confederate batteries using a steam tug towing two barges of provisions. This is a summary of the citation. The award record identifies him as a private at the action; the Medal of Honor Society lists corporal as his highest rank. His medal was issued on 31 December 1907. [1]
Hodges remained involved with fellow veterans after the war. According to the Michigan GAR records project, he was a charter member of David Becker Post No. 25 at Ogden Center and served as its commander in 1883, 1884 and 1886. The project records his transfer to Post No. 45 in 1914. [2]
He died on 28 July 1923 at Adrian, Michigan, aged 81, and was buried in Ogden-Zion Cemetery in Ogden Township. [1]
