First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Albert E. Fernald was an American soldier who fought during the American Civil War. Serving in the U.S. Army, he eventually attained the rank of First Lieutenant. Fernald is best remembered for his conspicuous bravery during the final weeks of the conflict in Virginia.
On April 1, 1865, during the Battle of Five Forks, Fernald performed the actions that would earn him the nation's highest military decoration. He was officially honored with the Medal of Honor on May 10, 1865, shortly after the cessation of major hostilities.
