Sergeant, British Army
Sergeant Alfred Ernest Ind, VC, was an English soldier of the Royal Horse Artillery, British Army, and a recipient of the Victoria Cross. During the Second Boer War, he earned the VC at Tafelkop, Orange River Colony, on 20 December 1901, for remaining at his pom-pom gun under heavy fire after the rest of the team had been struck down, continuing to fire until the last possible moment. His other medals included the Queen’s South Africa Medal, King’s South Africa Medal, King George V Coronation Medal 1911, and the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
