Alonzo Hereford Cushing was an artillery officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was killed in action while defending the Union position on Cemetery Ridge against Pickett's Charge. Despite suffering multiple severe wounds, including being struck in the shoulder by a shell fragment and later suffering grievous damage to his abdomen, he refused to abandon his command.
