Corporal, British Army
Arthur Percy Sullivan VC was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in South Australia, Sullivan worked for the National Bank of Australasia before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in April 1918 to serve in World War I. He arrived in the United Kingdom but had not yet completed his training when the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918.
Seeking active combat service, Sullivan was promoted to corporal in March 1919 and subsequently secured his discharge from the Australian Imperial Force in May of that year. Immediately upon his discharge, he enlisted in the British Army to serve with the North Russia Relief Force, which was deployed as part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War.
It was during his service in the Russian Civil War that Sullivan performed the actions for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He demonstrated exceptional bravery under fire, cementing his legacy as a highly decorated soldier of the campaign.
