Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force
Squadron Leader Arthur Stewart King Scarf, VC was an officer and pilot in the Royal Air Force. He is most distinguished for his actions during the early stages of the Pacific War, where his extreme gallantry in the face of the enemy earned him the Victoria Cross. He was the sole member of the Royal Air Force to receive this premier award for valour during the conflict in the Pacific theater.
Scarf's heroic actions took place during a perilous bombing mission in Malaya. Despite facing intense enemy opposition and sustaining mortal wounds, he successfully completed his bombing run and flew his damaged aircraft back to a safe landing, saving the lives of his crew members before succumbing to his injuries.
His legacy remains one of the most celebrated in the history of the Royal Air Force's operations in South East Asia during the Second World War. His Victoria Cross stands as a testament to his supreme self-sacrifice and devotion to duty.
