Sub-Lieutenant, Royal Navy
Arthur Walderne St Clair Tisdall VC was an officer of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve who served during the First World War. He was a British recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
His gallantry took place during the Gallipoli Campaign when, as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Division, he repeatedly braved heavy enemy fire to rescue wounded soldiers from the beach. His conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice during the landings became a legendary act of lifesaving under fire.
Tisdall was later killed in action during the campaign. His legacy is preserved through his Victoria Cross, which remains one of the most celebrated naval awards of the Gallipoli Campaign.
