Coxswain, U.S. Navy
Asa Betham was a sailor in the United States Navy who served during the American Civil War. He achieved the rank of coxswain, a critical shipboard role responsible for steering and navigation of small boats.
Betham's outstanding bravery during the conflict was demonstrated during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. This major amphibious assault by the Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps ultimately led to the capture of the last major stronghold of the Confederacy on the Atlantic coast.
In recognition of his gallant conduct during this decisive action, Betham was awarded the nation's highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor.
