Four days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Corporal Asbury F. Haynes captured an enemy flag during the fighting at Sailor's Creek. The feat earned him the Medal of Honor.
Asbury F. Haynes was born September 4, 1842, at Edinburg, Maine. During the period relevant to his Medal of Honor, he served as Corporal with Company F, 17th Maine Infantry.
