At Sailor's Creek on April 6, 1865, Private Asel Hagerty captured an enemy flag as Union forces broke apart much of the retreating Confederate army. The action earned him the Medal of Honor.
Asel Hagerty was born June 30, 1837, in Canada. During the period relevant to his Medal of Honor, he served as Private with Company A, 61st New York Infantry.
On April 6, 1865, at Deatonsville, Sailor's Creek, Virginia, he performed the action that led to the award. The surviving record fixes the core event clearly and allows the account to be told without adding unsupported detail.
