Biography
Audie Leon Murphy was an American soldier, actor, and songwriter who became widely celebrated as the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. Serving in the U.S. Army, Murphy received every military combat award for valor available from the Army, as well as several prestigious foreign decorations from France and Belgium.
He is most famously known for receiving the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions at the age of 19 during the Battle of the Colmar Pocket in France. In January 1945, Murphy single-handedly held off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour before leading a successful counterattack while wounded. His extraordinary bravery and leadership were key to saving his unit and halting the enemy advance.
Following his distinguished active duty service, Murphy also served in the Texas National Guard, eventually reaching the rank of Major. His legacy as a premier combat soldier remains one of the most storied and celebrated in the history of the United States military.
