Augustin D. Flanagan was born in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, on 10 August 1844. Before the war’s end he was serving as a sergeant in Company A, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry. The available sources do not give a fuller account of his family or civilian life before enlistment.
At Chapin’s Farm, Virginia, on 29 September 1864, Flanagan rushed forward with the regimental colors and called on the men to follow him during the charge on the Confederate works. He was severely wounded. He received the Medal of Honor on 6 April 1865. His Army service also qualified him for the Civil War Campaign Medal.
He died at Tecumseh on 22 January 1924 and was buried in Tecumseh Cemetery. No additional military decoration or later military campaign has been established in the sources consulted.
