For Augustus Barry, the Medal of Honor did not rest on a single famous charge. It recognized gallantry shown repeatedly in the campaigns through Tennessee and Georgia between 1863 and 1865.
Born in Ireland in 1840, Barry entered the United States Army and served as sergeant major of the 16th U.S. Infantry during the Civil War.
His Medal of Honor record covers a succession of actions in Tennessee and Georgia rather than one isolated battlefield moment. The terse citation reflects sustained courage during the campaigns in which his Regular Army regiment served.
