Carl Maxie Brashear was a pioneering American sailor who served in the United States Navy, overcoming immense racial and physical adversity. He became one of the first African-American Master Divers in the Navy, achieving this prestigious qualification in 1970 despite having his lower left leg amputated in 1966 following a tragic salvaging accident.
