Cecil John Kinross

The story of Cecil John Kinross VC is one of extraordinary bravery, selfless leadership, and unwavering determination during the First World War. His fearless actions on the battlefield secured his place among the most celebrated recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the British Commonwealth.

Born on 17 July 1896 in Uitenhage, Cape Colony, Kinross later immigrated to Canada and enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915. Serving with the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment), he fought on the Western Front during some of the war's fiercest battles. On 30 October 1917, during the Second Battle of Passchendaele, Kinross displayed exceptional courage by single handedly attacking and destroying a heavily defended German machine gun position that had halted his battalion's advance. Although seriously wounded during the assault, he refused evacuation until the position had been secured, allowing his comrades to continue the attack. For this remarkable act of gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, with the award announced in the London Gazette on 8 January 1918.

His wartime service was further recognised with the British War Medal 1914 to 1920 and the Victory Medal, awarded for his overseas service during the First World War. In later years, his distinguished public service and status as one of Canada's surviving Victoria Cross recipients were recognised with the King George VI Coronation Medal in 1937 and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal in 1953.

Cecil John Kinross passed away on 4 July 1957, leaving behind a legacy of courage that continues to inspire generations of Canadians. His Victoria Cross remains a symbol of extraordinary heroism, and his name is forever remembered among the nation's most distinguished military heroes.
