Quarter Gunner, U.S. Navy
Charles Asten served as a Quarter Gunner in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in September 1834, he later emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the Navy in Chicago, Illinois.
During the Red River Campaign in 1864, Asten was stationed aboard the USS Signal, a wooden tinclad gunboat. His actions during this grueling riverine campaign earned him the nation's highest military decoration for valor.
