Helped move and handle naval howitzers ashore under fire.
Michael Connelly entered the Medal of Honor record under the name John Mack. The alias is important because the official Navy record follows Mack, while the man himself is identified in Medal of Honor research as Michael Connelly.
Born in Maine in 1843, he served as a seaman aboard USS Hendrick Hudson. During operations near St. Marks, Florida, on March 5 and 6, 1865, he went ashore with Army troops as part of a naval howitzer detachment. Under enemy fire, he helped transport and handle the gun during the expedition.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): While serving with Army forces ashore near St. Marks, he assisted with the Navy howitzers and helped move a gun under enemy fire.
Connelly died in Lynn, Massachusetts, on November 10, 1881, and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery there.
