Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
Charles Joseph Berry was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps who posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration for valor, for his heroic actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
On March 6, 1945, during the fierce fighting on Iwo Jima, Corporal Berry was positioned in a foxhole when an enemy hand grenade landed in his emplacement. Realizing the imminent danger to his comrades, he chose to sacrifice his own life by diving onto the grenade, absorbing the blast with his body. His selfless act of bravery saved the lives of his fellow Marines in the immediate vicinity.
Corporal Berry's extraordinary courage and devotion to duty were recognized with the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, and several campaign medals. His legacy of ultimate sacrifice remains a shining example of the highest traditions of the Marine Corps.
