Major, U.S. Air Force
Major Charles Joseph Loring Jr. was a distinguished fighter pilot who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and later in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Known for his exceptional skill and bravery, Loring flew numerous combat missions in both conflicts, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to his country and his fellow servicemen.
On November 22, 1952, during a close air support mission near Kunwha, Korea, Major Loring led a flight of F-80 Shooting Stars against enemy artillery positions. After his aircraft was heavily damaged by ground fire, he aggressively pressed the attack, deliberately diving his crippled jet into the enemy gun emplacements. His ultimate sacrifice successfully destroyed the target and saved the lives of ground troops.
For his extraordinary heroism and self-sacrifice during the Korean War, Major Loring was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His legacy of valor remains an inspiring chapter in United States Air Force history.
