Claron Augustus Windus had a long and varied military career, starting his service in the United States Army during the American Civil War as a drummer boy. He continued his service during the American Indian Wars, serving as a bugler in the cavalry. He later volunteered for service in the Spanish–American War, during which he attained the rank of captain.
Windus is most famous for his actions on July 12, 1870, at the Wichita River in Texas. While serving with Company L of the 6th U.S. Cavalry during the American Indian Wars, he demonstrated exceptional gallantry in a battle against Kiowa Indians. This action earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Following his distinguished service across multiple eras of American conflict, Windus left a legacy as a versatile soldier who rose from the rank of drummer boy to captain, embodying courage and dedication to duty over several decades of service.
