He guided cavalry through the harsh Apache winter campaigns.
Elsatsoosu was an Apache scout serving with the United States Army. His recognised service took place during the winter campaigns of 1872 and 1873 in Arizona Territory.
Army operations depended on Indigenous scouts' knowledge of the terrain and ability to locate and follow opposing groups. Elsatsoosu held the rank of corporal and served with the scouts associated with the 5th Cavalry. His service during these campaigns earned the Medal of Honor.
His medal was issued on 12 April 1875. His record belongs within the complex history of Apache participation on different sides of the United States' expansion in the Southwest.
