Francis Marion Cunningham was an American soldier and native of Pennsylvania who fought with Company H of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry during the American Civil War.
During the Battle of Sailor's Creek in Virginia on April 6, 1865, Cunningham performed the actions that would earn him the nation's highest military decoration. For his gallantry in action during this engagement, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
Cunningham's medal was officially conferred on May 3, 1865, cementing his place in the history of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry and the Union war effort during the final days of the Civil War.
