Warrant Officer, Canadian Army
Francis Pegahmagabow was an Ojibwe soldier, politician and activist who became the most highly decorated Indigenous soldier in Canadian military history. Serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, he established a reputation as an exceptionally skilled scout and the most effective sniper of the entire conflict. He was credited with killing 378 Germans and capturing 300 more, making him one of the deadliest snipers in military history.
Throughout his service, Pegahmagabow was wounded seriously and was awarded the Military Medal three times for his bravery and skill as an expert marksman. His actions on the battlefield cemented his legacy as a legendary Canadian military figure.
Following his military service, Pegahmagabow returned to Canada and transitioned into a prominent role as a politician and activist. He served as chief and a councillor for the Wasauksing First Nation and worked alongside other noted Aboriginal leaders to advocate for Indigenous rights and organization.
