Lieutenant Colonel (posthumous), U.S. Air Force
George Andrew Davis Jr. was a highly decorated fighter pilot and flying ace of the United States Army Air Forces in World War II, and later of the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Highly regarded for his aerial skill, Davis flew numerous combat missions in both conflicts, demonstrating exceptional courage and tactical proficiency in the skies.
He was killed in action during a high-stakes combat mission in northwestern Korea, in the heavily contested airspace nicknamed 'MiG Alley'. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty during the Korean War, Davis was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and promoted from major to lieutenant colonel.
His legacy remains one of the most distinguished in American military aviation history, remembered for his extreme bravery, leadership, and sacrifice. Davis's numerous decorations reflect a career of intense combat service spanning two major global conflicts.
