Major, U.S. Army
George Franklin Shiels was a surgeon in the United States Army who served during the Philippine–American War. He entered the service from California and went on to serve as a Surgeon with the U.S. Volunteers.
During his service in the Philippine Islands, Shiels demonstrated exceptional bravery on March 25, 1899, at the Tuliahan River. He voluntarily exposed himself to enemy fire to rescue wounded individuals, an action for which he would later be awarded the Medal of Honor.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, which was officially issued to him on November 22, 1906, Shiels' service and valor were further recognized with other prestigious military decorations, including the Distinguished Service Cross and the French Croix de Guerre.
