Chief Petty Officer, Royal Navy
Chief Petty Officer George Henry Prowse VC, DCM was a British Royal Navy sailor who served with distinction during the First World War. He served with the Royal Naval Division during the Gallipoli Campaign and later on the Western Front in France, demonstrating immense gallantry in the face of the enemy.
Throughout his service on the Western Front, Prowse's actions earned him the nation's highest military honors. Tragically, he was killed in action before the official announcement of either of his decorations.
Following his death, his widow, Sarah Prowse, was presented with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on July 17, 1919. His Victoria Cross is currently preserved as part of the Lord Ashcroft VC Collection at the Imperial War Museum.
