Harry LeRoy Hawthorne was an American military officer who served in both the United States Navy and the United States Army. He began his military career as a Cadet Engineer in the Navy before transitioning to the Army, where he eventually achieved the rank of Colonel. He is best known for his actions during the Indian Wars period in the late 19th century.
Hawthorne was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor, for his actions on December 29, 1890, during the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota. At the time of the action, he was serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 2nd U.S. Artillery.
Throughout his long military career, Hawthorne demonstrated a high level of commitment to service across multiple branches. His transition from naval engineering to army artillery showcased his versatile leadership and technical capabilities, culminating in his retirement at the rank of Colonel.
