Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
Harry Lewis MacNeal was a United States Marine who served during the late 19th century. He is best known for receiving the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish–American War.
Operating as a Corporal, MacNeal was one of fifteen Marines, all of whom were enlisted men, to receive the Medal of Honor during the conflict. Notably, he was the only Marine Corps recipient of the Medal of Honor for this particular naval and land battle.
His courageous actions in Cuba cemented his legacy within the United States Marine Corps during an era of global transition for American military power. His service remains a distinguished chapter in the history of the Marine Corps' involvement in the Spanish–American War.
