First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps
First Lieutenant Harry Linn Martin was a United States Marine Corps officer who served honorably during World War II. He is most distinguished for his heroic actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he demonstrated extraordinary leadership and valor in combat. For his conspicuous gallantry at the cost of his life, he posthumously received the nation's highest military decoration.
On March 26, 1945, during the fierce fighting on Iwo Jima, First Lieutenant Martin organized and led a successful counterattack against a Japanese force that had penetrated his unit's lines. Despite being twice wounded, he repeatedly braved intense enemy fire to rescue wounded Marines and personally destroy enemy positions before he was mortally wounded.
His sacrifice and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He remains remembered as a symbol of the courage and determination exhibited by the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
