Brigadier General, U.S. Army
Hazard Stevens was an American military officer, mountaineer, politician, and writer who served with distinction as a Union officer during the American Civil War, eventually attaining the brevet rank of brigadier general. Born into a prominent family, he established himself as a brave combat leader during some of the war's most intense campaigns.
He is best known militarily for his actions at the Battle of Fort Huger, where his outstanding gallantry earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. His service throughout the Civil War showcased his leadership capabilities and dedication to the Union cause.
Following his military career, Stevens transitioned to civilian life, where he became a pioneering mountaineer. On August 17, 1870, he and Philemon Beecher Van Trump successfully completed the first documented climb of Mount Rainier. He also made significant contributions as a writer and politician before his death.
