Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps
Hector Albert Cafferata Jr. was a United States Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. Serving as a Private First Class, Cafferata distinguished himself in November 1950 by single-handedly defending his unit's position against a regimental-strength enemy force.
During the intense combat, he protected wounded fellow Marines by throwing away a live enemy grenade that had landed in their trench, which resulted in serious personal injury to himself. His extraordinary courage and selflessness during the battle prevented the enemy from penetrating the line and saved numerous lives.
For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. His legacy remains an enduring symbol of Marine Corps valor and dedication during the Korean War.
