Torpedoman's Mate Petty Officer First Class (U.S. Navy), Royal Navy
Henry Breault was a United States Navy submarine sailor who achieved historical distinction as the first submariner, and the only enlisted submariner, to receive the Medal of Honor for heroic actions performed aboard a United States submarine. His historic decoration arose from his self-sacrificing actions while serving aboard the submarine USS O-5 (SS-66) in 1923.
Prior to his notable service in the United States Navy, Breault served with the British Royal Navy, which earned him foreign recognition. He later transitioned to the U.S. Navy, where he served with distinction across multiple decades, including service during the Yangtze River Expedition and leading up to World War II.
Breault's legacy remains a cornerstone of the United States Submarine Force's heritage. His courage under extreme pressure aboard the stricken USS O-5 exemplifies the highest standards of naval service and enlisted leadership in moments of maritime disaster.
