Ensign, U.S. Navy

Henry Clay Drexler was an Ensign in the United States Navy who was posthumously awarded the nation's highest military decorations for his extraordinary heroism. Serving aboard the USS Trenton (CL-11), Ensign Drexler demonstrated exceptional courage during a critical emergency on board the vessel.
While operating in the Atlantic, a powder fire broke out in the forward twin mount of the cruiser. Despite the imminent danger of a catastrophic explosion, Ensign Drexler and his men remained at their posts to extinguish the fire and save their shipmates. He sacrificed his life in the effort to prevent further disaster.
For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Drexler was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He was also a recipient of the Navy Cross, making him one of the highly decorated officers of his era.
