Ensign, U.S. Navy

Ensign Herbert Charpiot Jones was an officer in the United States Navy who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
While serving aboard the USS California (BB-44), Ensign Jones organized and led a relief party to carry ammunition to the ship's anti-aircraft guns after the mechanical hoists were knocked out. He was mortally wounded when a bomb exploded near his station during the second wave of Japanese air attacks.
Despite his severe injuries, Ensign Jones refused to be moved by his crew members, ordering them to save themselves and leave him behind to avoid further casualties. His self-sacrifice and extraordinary heroism in the face of death earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
