Major, British Army
Major Herbert Augustine Carter VC was an English officer of the British Army who served with distinction during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the son of the vicar of St Erth in Cornwall. Carter's military career was marked by his active service in East Africa, where he participated in two separate campaigns.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces. His exceptional bravery under fire earned him a lasting place in military history.
Today, his legacy is preserved in his home county of Cornwall, England, where his Victoria Cross is on public display at the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Museum in Bodmin.
