Sergeant Major, U.S. Army
Herbert E. Farnsworth was an American soldier who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Serving with the 10th New York Cavalry, he demonstrated exceptional bravery during the Battle of Trevilian Station in Virginia on June 11, 1864, which was the largest all-cavalry battle of the war.
During the intense fighting at Trevilian Station, Farnsworth performed a heroic action that later earned him the nation's highest military decoration. He voluntarily carried a critical order to a detached portion of his regiment under heavy enemy fire, ensuring the unit could be successfully reunited.
For his gallantry in action, Farnsworth was officially awarded the Medal of Honor on April 1, 1898. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Army, representing a long and dedicated career of military service.
