Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy

Rear Admiral Herbert Emery Schonland was an officer of the United States Navy who was awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his extraordinary heroism during World War II.
Schonland received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. Serving aboard the cruiser USS San Francisco (CA-38), he assumed command of damage control efforts after the ship's bridge was devastated, successfully keeping the heavily damaged vessel afloat through his tireless leadership and expertise.
Following his distinguished wartime service, which included multiple campaign decorations, he eventually retired from active duty with the rank of Rear Admiral. His legacy remains as one of the key naval heroes of the Pacific theater.
