Private, U.S. Army
Private Herbert F. Christian was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during World War II.
During the Allied advance on Rome, Christian's patrol was ambushed by German forces. In a supreme act of self-sacrifice, Christian deliberately drew the enemy's fire toward himself, allowing the other members of his patrol to escape the ambush safely.
For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Christian was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, cementing his legacy as a hero of the Italian campaign.
