Trooper, South African Army
Herman Albrecht was a Cape Colony recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He served as a Trooper in the Imperial Light Horse during the Second Boer War.
Albrecht was killed in action during the Battle of Wagon Hill (Platrand, Ladysmith) on January 6, 1900. His actions during the defense of the hill earned him the posthumous Victoria Cross. He is remembered on the Imperial Light Horse Memorial on Platrand, Ladysmith, near the site where he fell.
His Victoria Cross is preserved and displayed at the South African National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg, serving as a lasting testament to his bravery and sacrifice.
