First Sergeant, U.S. Army
First Sergeant Homer Lee Wise was a United States Army soldier who received the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during World War II. Born in Louisiana, Wise served with the 36th Infantry Division during the Italian Campaign, where he performed the actions that earned him the nation's highest military honor.
On June 14, 1944, near Magliano, Italy, while his platoon was pinned down by devastating enemy fire, Sergeant Wise went forward alone to assist in bringing a tank into action. Armed with a submachine gun and later operating a tank-mounted machine gun, he single-handedly neutralized multiple German positions and ran through heavy fire to carry a wounded soldier to safety.
Following his wartime service, Wise returned to civilian life and eventually settled in Connecticut. His legacy is preserved through his decorations and various memorials dedicated to his bravery and service during the second World War.
