Hugh Carey (1840–1886) was a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served with distinction, demonstrating remarkable courage during one of the most pivotal conflicts in American history.
On July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg, Carey performed the actions that would define his military legacy. He acted with daring by capturing the flag of the 7th Virginia Infantry, suffering two wounds in the process of securing the enemy colors.
For his gallantry and heroic actions at Gettysburg, Carey was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration for valor. He lived until 1886, leaving behind a legacy of bravery in the face of intense combat.
