Civil War soldier saved comrades from a deadly artillery shell
At Buzzard's Roost, Private Jacob F. Yeager seized a live artillery shell and threw it into a stream before it could explode among his comrades.
Jacob F. Yeager was born January 27, 1841, at New Texas, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. During the period relevant to this record, he served as Private with Company H, 101st Ohio Infantry.
On May 11, 1864, at Buzzard's Roost, Georgia, the act required Yeager to handle a shell whose fuse was already burning. His quick action removed the immediate danger to nearby soldiers.
