Jacqueline Cochran was a pioneering American aviator and business executive who became one of the most prominent flight figures of her generation. She was the wartime head of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) from 1943 to 1944, directing the organization, training, and operation of civilian women pilots who ferried military aircraft during World War II. For her exceptional leadership and service during the conflict, she became the first civilian woman to receive the Distinguished Service Medal.
