Sergeant, U.S. Army
James Brown was a Sergeant in the United States Army who served during the Indian Wars in the late 19th century. Born in Wexford, Ireland, he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Company F, 5th US Cavalry. He is best known for his extraordinary heroism and leadership during a skirmish in the Arizona Territory.
On August 27, 1872, near Davidson Canyon, Arizona Territory, Sergeant Brown was in command of a small detachment of only four men. Despite their limited numbers, Brown led his men to successfully defeat a superior opposing force through tactical skill and bravery. His actions during this engagement demonstrated exceptional leadership and valor under fire.
In recognition of his actions during the Indian Wars, Sergeant Brown was awarded the Medal of Honor, which was officially issued on December 4, 1874. His legacy remains as a testament to the courage of non-commissioned officers serving on the American frontier.
