Lieutenant General, U.S. Army
Lieutenant General James Cordie Dozier was a distinguished United States Army officer whose military service spanned both World Wars. He earned the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his extraordinary heroism on October 8, 1918, while serving in France during World War I.
Following his combat service in the First World War, Dozier rejoined the South Carolina National Guard in December 1920. He helped organize the "Frank Roach Guards" in Rock Hill to honor a fallen comrade. Showing exceptional leadership, he rose to the rank of Major by 1921, commanding the 3rd Battalion of the 118th Infantry Regiment.
In January 1926, Dozier was appointed as The Adjutant General of South Carolina. Under his leadership, the South Carolina National Guard expanded significantly from its initial strength of just over two thousand officers and men. He continued his dedicated service through the era of World War II, retiring as a Lieutenant General.
