He led his men despite a grave wound that silenced his voice

James Edward Robinson Jr. was born at Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in a family that later settled in Texas. As a teenager he joined the Texas National Guard. He enlisted in the regular United States Army in June 1939, advanced through the enlisted ranks to master sergeant and then completed officer training at Fort Sill.

Commissioned in the field artillery, he joined the 861st Field Artillery Battalion of the 63rd Infantry Division. He married Vina Crawson and became the father of a daughter. In January 1945 his unit went to France. As a forward observer with the 253rd Infantry, he directed artillery support from positions close to the fighting. Two actions in February and March subsequently brought the Bronze Star Medal and a second award represented by an oak-leaf cluster.

On 6 April 1945, during the advance on Kressbach, Germany, Robinson assumed leadership after the infantry company's officers became casualties. Although wounded in the throat, he continued urging the surviving men forward and directing the attack. His injury made speech difficult, but he maintained control and helped the company reach its objective.

Only after the position had been taken did he seek treatment, walking approximately two miles to an aid station. His wounds proved fatal that evening. His posthumous Medal of Honor recognised his leadership, persistence and disregard of his own injuries.

His widow received the notification of his decorations. France later awarded him the Croix de Guerre with a silver star, and an Army cargo vessel was named in his honour. His remains were returned to Texas and buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
