Sergeant first class, U.S. Army
Jared Christopher Monti was a soldier in the United States Army who served during the War in Afghanistan. Born in Massachusetts, Monti enlisted in the Army in 1993 and went on to serve in the 10th Mountain Division. He was deployed multiple times, including missions to Kosovo, South Korea, and eventually Afghanistan.
On June 21, 2006, during a firefight with enemy forces in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, Sergeant First Class Monti demonstrated extraordinary heroism. When his patrol was ambushed by a much larger enemy force and one of his soldiers was left severely wounded in an exposed position, Monti made three separate, perilous attempts to rescue the fallen soldier under intense enemy fire.
He was mortally wounded during his third rescue attempt. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Monti was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, which was presented to his family by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony in 2009.
