Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
Corporal Jason Lee Dunham was a distinguished member of the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 3rd Battalion 7th Marines during the Iraq War. His extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously.
On April 10, 2004, while leading a patrol in Husaybah, Corporal Dunham's unit came under attack. During the intense fighting, a live grenade was thrown near him and his fellow Marines. In a selfless act of heroism, Corporal Dunham deliberately covered the grenade with his helmet and body, absorbing the brunt of the explosion to shield his comrades from its lethal force.
Though his actions saved the lives of his fellow Marines, Corporal Dunham was gravely wounded in the blast. He succumbed to his injuries eight days later, on April 22, 2004, having demonstrated the ultimate sacrifice in defense of his unit. His legacy of valor continues to inspire, embodying the highest ideals of the Marine Corps and the American fighting spirit.
