Biography
Led eight men behind enemy lines to destroy a signal station
Jean Joseph Beaufort earned the Medal of Honor for a raid carried out inside Confederate lines before the main operations against Port Hudson.
Jean J. Beaufort was born 1832 in France. During the period relevant to this record he served as Corporal with Company A, 2d Louisiana Infantry.
On May 20, 1863, at Port Hudson, Louisiana, beaufort volunteered to lead a party of eight men through the enemy lines and destroy a signal station. The mission materially assisted the Union operations that followed against Port Hudson.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed)
Volunteered to enter the enemy lines, led eight men in destroying a signal station, and thereby aided the operations against Port Hudson.
He died September 15, 1897. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
